Feeding FAQs
How do I know if my baby is getting enough milk?
Signs your baby is well-fed include: 6+ wet diapers per day (after day 5), 3-4 dirty diapers daily in the first month, steady weight gain after initial newborn loss, seeming satisfied after feeds, and being alert when awake.
Should I wake my baby to feed?
For the first 2-3 weeks, yes - newborns should be fed every 2-3 hours (even at night) to establish good weight gain. After that, if your baby is gaining weight well, you can let them sleep longer stretches at night.
Why won't my baby take a bottle?
Some breastfed babies resist bottles. Try different nipple shapes, have someone other than mom offer the bottle, warm the milk to body temperature, and try when baby is calm but hungry (not starving). Our complete guide has more tips.
When can I start solid foods?
Most babies are ready for solids around 6 months when they can sit up with support, show interest in food, and have lost the tongue-thrust reflex. Always consult your pediatrician before starting solids.
